Ruth Michel Scholarship Fund
Ruth Michel was a lifelong educator whose work transformed the lives of hundreds of young people with disabilities, their families, and the broader community.
Ruth began her career as a primary grade teacher in the Pittsburgh Public Schools, where she was recognized early for her natural talent and dedication to teaching. After moving to Westfield, New Jersey, she continued serving her community by supporting Temple Emanu-El during a leadership transition in its nursery school, stepping in as a teacher and helping guide the program forward.
When Ruth returned to full-time teaching, she found her calling in special education. She joined a program serving students ages 16 to 21 with significant learning challenges, applying her primary education training, creativity, and compassion to help students develop essential life skills. Alongside her colleagues, Ruth helped design a comprehensive curriculum that blended vocational training, community engagement, cultural enrichment, physical fitness, and personal independence. She believed learning should be meaningful and joyful, turning everyday experiences—like grocery shopping or bowling—into opportunities for growth.
After earning her master’s degree in Special Education from Kean College, Ruth became a lead teacher in Union County’s SAVE program. Over the course of her career, more than 500 students benefited from the program she helped build. Many also went on to learn from Ruth as a mentor, as she guided student teachers with the same warmth and encouragement she gave her students.
Beyond the classroom, Ruth was a devoted caregiver and an early volunteer with Temple Emanu-El’s Hospitality Network, supporting families experiencing homelessness. Even in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, she continued volunteering at food pantries and assisting families in need.
Ruth’s life was defined by service, empathy, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every person. In her honor, a scholarship fund has been established with Inroads to Opportunities, an organization that continues the work Ruth dedicated her life to advancing.
Donations made in Ruth’s memory will help ensure her legacy lives on—empowering individuals with disabilities to build skills, independence, and meaningful lives.
